Draconian Arizona anti-abortion law from 1864 repealed
The Arizona Supreme Court shocked the nation several weeks ago by upholding a Civil-war era law that prohibited abortion except to save the mother's life. The Arizona legislature just voted to repeal the law, with two Republicans joining the Democrats. Even anti-abortion fanatics like Donald Trump and Kari Lake said the 1864 law went too far, although Republicans were concerned that the court's decision would draw Democrats to the polls in November to vote against them. The new law won't take effect until 90 days after the end of the current legislative session, so there may be a short period when the slave-era law takes effect on June 27.

The repeal doesn't completely legalize abortion; it only will return it to its prior state of being legal only up to 15 weeks. 60% of Arizona voters oppose this as well as the far more restrictive 1864 law. Abortion will still be an issue in November as there is a ballot measure that would protect access to the procedure.
