Driving in silence

I always had to listen to some kind of music while driving but for the past couple of months I've been driving in complete silence. I've been telling myself it's just my preferences are changing and I don't mentally feel any different but is this a sign of something?

Professional truck driver here. about 80% of the time I have nothing but the noise of the road in my ears. It is a nice little disconnect from All the audio stimulants we are subjected to every day.
beaglehunter · 70-79, M
@ErecSchunn yup a great job but after you do it for 39 years you most used words will be huh can you speak up as i cant hear you
ErecSchunn · 46-50, M
@beaglehunter I’ve only been at it for 7 but I’m burning out, mostly due to the “drivers” these cdl factories put behind the wheel

I find myself doing the same more often..

It's good, you are able to fully concentrate on driving. I guess there is little bit of reduction in your concentration level, or there is increase in mental distraction, not enough to impact your driving abilities.
PinkRangerCassie · 26-30, F
@ABCDEF7 True but I don’t think that is the reason I stopped.
ABCDEF7 · M
@PinkRangerCassie Yes, reasons can be different. Have you also reduced listening to music overall?

It can have some psychological reason, maybe related to change in your emotional/relational conditions or perspectives.

I genuinely can't drive if I don't have music playing, every window down, and if I'm wearing anything below the waist
PinkRangerCassie · 26-30, F
@BigImo I was the exact same way but it’s just been a new thing for me I guess. I don’t exactly know why

Made the conversion years ago. Primarily I think because of the deterioration of radio; who needs more noise and screaming heads in their lives? But once I did, I began to appreciate the relative silence and what a distraction radio, tapes, CDs, whatever, can be as well as shutting out the sounds you should be paying attention to while driving. Call in aging with its diminished hearing and multitasking skills, or maturing and recognizing the full responsibilities of driving.

I drive in silence also have for a few years now. Like maybe 5
PinkRangerCassie · 26-30, F
@Jonjdw What made you stop?
Jonjdw · 46-50, M
@PinkRangerCassie just wanted quiet. New music not appealing. Rather hear talk or nothing.
PinkRangerCassie · 26-30, F
@Jonjdw True that. I get that same feeling
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
It’s a sign you’re getting comfortable with the silence and with your own thoughts. It’s excellent
PinkRangerCassie · 26-30, F
@Jenny1234 I thought it possibly could’ve been the opposite but hmmm that’s something to consider definitely!
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
Maturity. You are becoming more comfortable with your own thoughts.
katydidnt · 61-69, F
@hippyjoe1955 Exactly!

Sometimes you just need a break from the constant stimulation I think.

I used to LOVE listening to music in the car, but a few years ago the battery in my car died and the radio got messed up as a result. It is a very simple fix, but I didn't bother for a could days, and then a couple weeks, and then I started to realize that I was enjoying the silence of the car tremendously.

I very much enjoy my quiet commutes - I feel like it helps untangle my brain & somehow be more relaxed.

This short documentary will explain it to you:

sometimes it's good to listen to what your motor is saying .
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Older guy's perspective here.

I've started doing the same.
For probably two or three months now.

So much meaningless noise to accompany life these days.
And modern cars are pretty well insulated from all that.

Kinda nice.
PatKirby · M
Yeah it's a preference for silence.

@PinkRangerCassie You want to increase your IQ? Listening to classical music has been proven to raise IQ levels by 5-10%.
PinkRangerCassie · 26-30, F
@PatKirby I didn’t know that. That’s very interesting!
PatKirby · M
@PinkRangerCassie

It opens up the other side of the brain to accept new stimulus. Don't get me wrong, music has its place. When I need a good boost while pumping iron in the gym, heavy metal motivates me big time to break new barriers. Likewise, when I need to be reminded there is goodness in the world...

If that doesn't lift your spirits I don't know what will. 😆
iamnikki · 31-35, F
Could be that you are stressed or overwhelmed.
There have been plenty of times I drive home from work in silence
Idk sometimes i sing while driving .. maybe you are fed up with your usual channel and need a more soothing one..
PinkRangerCassie · 26-30, F
@SStarfish I wasn't listening to the radio, it was all aux or internet "radio" where I selected the music
Musicman · 61-69, M
I have to have my music or listening to something. On a trip a nice audiobook is nice too.
