How many of you are waitstaff and what is that like?

What is it like being a waiter / waitress? Do you work in an upscape place, a diner or other ? Tell us about that career choice.

It’s fun overall but there are some shitty moments/points. Also the monetary ceiling isn’t too high. You probably will never be higher than lower middle class, but even to get that high is rare. In other words you are bound for lower class, but the job is flexible when it comes to hours. Most ppl choose this job type because they have other hobbies/responsibilities that also require a decent amount of time, Or they plan to do 2 or 3 more serving jobs at the same time. To get to a higher paying position aka GM is rare/cited for very few personality types that few ppl have. I’ve worked at every style restaurant: bars, cafes, night clubs, theaters, hotels, country clubs, staffing events, casual dining, fine dining, high volume, counter service etc..I’ve been in the industry for 15yrs …Serving has become my career by default not bc I chose it. I’m Always looking to find another type of job these days. I would really like to find my true career. However most other jobs I’ve tried pay equivalently or less, or pay the same but require more of my time. I’m looking for a career I can grow old into that also obviously pays more. Serving requires a lot of physical work, besides being able to stand extended hours with out sitting. You are not allowed to sit, so eventually there will be an end date to that job whether I like it or not. I’ve never made enough to save or retire from any serving job I’ve had. You don’t get any benefits or health insurance. Mainly just make enough to survive, party, and go on short vacations here and there. The job requires quick organizational skills, improv, a stable personality, and a lot of patience considering the various people you meet everyday. That being said you also do get to meet a variety of different people, which does keep it interesting. However, in a lot of ways you become a glorified babysitter to said ppl, especially if they’re drunk. People do try to push you around at times. You always have the right to serve to whoever you choose, no matter what. If you have a better job I do not recommend leaving it for a serving job, but if you are curious you could keep your job and look for a part time serving job to do in the evenings for awhile to see what it’s like. A perk is that you do get either free or discounted food. You also get to influence a lot of people and you have the opportunity to make people smile whether it be through a nice gesture or sharing a joke or just listening to what they have to say. @robertsnj

Upscape? Not an actual word.

@RedBaron very nice and unoriginal, 🥱(but that seems to be on brand for you now…)

@Badjujubee But a highly appropriate response. Original or not is just noise.

And “Captain Obvious” wasn’t original on your part either, so now I raise you a “Pot, meet Kettle.” 🤣
